Early Life & Family

  • Dwayne Johnson was born into a family with wrestling roots. His father, Rocky Johnson, was a trailblazing Black Canadian professional wrestler, and his maternal grandfather, Peter Maivia, was a famous Samoan wrestler.

  • Growing up, he lived in New Zealand for a time before moving back to the U.S.

  • He played football in high school and earned a scholarship to the University of Miami, where he played defensive tackle. In 1991, he was part of the Miami Hurricanes’ national championship team.

  • After a brief football career, including a stint with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League, he transitioned into professional wrestling.
